5 Ways To Make the Most Out of University Life

by | Nov 30, 2017 | Students

The beginning of university life is always an exciting time – it’s new and scary but it is the start of your young adult life and your independence. Being in a new city, surrounded by unfamiliar people may seem a little daunting, but many students say their time at university is some of the best years of their lives.

As we are nearing Christmas, your first term is close to the end, ready for you to take a break and see your loved ones, after all, you’ve worked hard for the last three months! But what is it you learn in your first term at university? We have compiled a list of what the top things learnt during this time are.

Your Friendship Groups

Some say the friends you make at university are the friends you’ll make for life, and during the first term you will have met a lot of people through your accommodation, course, or social events and gatherings. This is the time your friendship groups will be forming, and it is certainly a fun and exciting time for you. These are the people that will become your family away from home, the ones you could potentially end up living with, and you’ve still got so many memories left to share and experience.

Is This Course Really for You?

At this point of your first year, you will truly determine whether this course is 100% right for you. It isn’t uncommon for people to change course or decide this isn’t for them. You would rather spend 3 months doing a course you want to change than 3 years, it is important that you enjoy what you are doing to enjoy your overall experience. The first term will give you a good insight into what you can expect of your course throughout your years at university.

How Far You Can Stretch Your Money

Stretching your money is a skill you will begin to master in your first term. Student loans have to last you a full term, and nearing the end, it can be testing to make this money last. You will learn to buy the essentials such as food and university supplies, but whilst on a budget that allows you to pay your rent and other bills.

Learn to buy in bulk and make it last is a great tip you will learn to remember and live by. Although many found food shopping a chore, you will learn it can be fun- try to shop as a group and make joint meals to ease the pressure and cost.

You’ve Learnt Your Way Around

How many times have you been lost finding your way around campus? Moving out and being in a new city means you need to learn the surrounding areas. Universities can be big places, and you could find a lecture being on the other side of campus than where you have found yourself! Your first term is all about exploring and learning what you have near you.

By the time your first term is over, you will find yourself more knowledgeable of the area, and although you might still get lost sometimes, you’re not completely lost.
